Clone beers? Do I ever? Have I ever? A very interesting topic from Rob at Pfiff! I have not yet cloned a commerical beer. Not because I haven’t wanted to, more because I am busy exploring the styles out there and looking to commerical styles for inspiration rather than an exact product. There are a number of commerical styles I would like to clone, and my next beer in fact is planned to be a clone of Hennepin, one of my favorite beers (which you can not buy in Calgary unfortunately.
I have more or less been cloning a style of beer which I fell in love with, the 10 degree plato lager. I really don’t think there is a valid way of cloning the great examples of these Czech beers unless you re-engineer the water from the specific brewery. Which I suppose is possible to do, but is it really necessary? The great beers we want to clone where often imitations of other popular beers brewed with the local ingredients and water, and from this you get the variety we find in the craft brewing world today.
With all of that in mind here is my clone recipe for Hennepin, I pulled it out of a homebrewclub newsletter, modified the hops and will give it a try hopefully on Monday. Has anyone done a clone for Hennepin before? How did it turn out?
